HOSTETTLER VOTES TO PROTECT MINORS AND DEFEND THE RIGHTS OF UNBORN CHILDREN

WASHINGTON, DC - Rep. John Hostettler (IN-08) today voted in support of S. 403, the Child Custody Protection Act, which passed the House of Representatives today. This legislation will protect minors from being exploited or coerced into having an abortion.

"This bill makes sense on so many levels," said Hostettler, "it has always amazed me that we expect minors to obtain the signature of their parents when they go on a school field trip, take medicine from the school nurse, or even to excuse an absence from class - but that it is argued by many abortion advocates that a minor could have an abortion without any notification. Not only is abortion the taking of a human life, but it is also a potentially dangerous medical procedure for the mother.

If a minor happens to live in a state like Indiana that has common-sense restrictions that require parental notification, the federal government should not undermine those restrictions. We need to protect minors and respect the right of parents to know about a decision of this magnitude.

This bill closes a dangerous loophole. When a minor is transported across state lines to go to a state that does not have such a law, you can be assured that no good could possibly come from that action. The minor could be coerced into doing something that they will later regret and the parents would never know a thing. That is outrageous. This bill will put an end to such a practice."

The Child Custody Protection Act will help ensure that parents are involved in their child's abortion decision and protect minors from being coerced into having an abortion. It makes it a federal crime to transport a minor across state lines to have an abortion with the intent of evading parental consent or parental notification laws in the minor's home state. The bill also requires abortion providers in interstate abortions to provide notification of the minor's decision to the minor's parents or legal guardian 24 hours before the abortion is performed.
